Well, Christmas movie fans, we’ve finally heard from Peter Billingsley about whether or not Die Hard is really a Christmas movie. Billingsley said yes, indeed, it is a holiday favorite. He talks about it on his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which dropped on Friday.
“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture, and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.”
Peter Billingsley Does Deep Dive Into Christmas Movies
Billingsley then brought up other stars from Christmas-themed movies that have talked about their films, too. “People like Jan (de Bont) and Beverly D’Angelo from Christmas Vacation, it’s nice to have a comfortable environment to sit and have a well thought out, in-depth conversation about the movies that they love,” Billingsley said. “They know the power of these movies and what they mean to fans.”
Billingsley added, “We do the podcast in partnership with Spotify and we’ve got a video component, which is great. When filmmakers are in the studio, we’re able to show them clips and get them to remember what they were doing and decode some of the tricks they used on set.”
Die Hard follows the travails of John McClane, played by Bruce Willis, who finds himself at odds with Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman, in the Nakatomi Corporation building. The New York police officer had come out to LA to visit his wife Holly, played by Bonnie Bedelia. But things go awry after Gruber and his crew take hostages.
Actor Discussed Holiday Tag With ‘Die Hard’ Cinematographer
Billingsley, who gave a lengthy interview with The Reporter, talked about getting Die Hard cinematographer de Bont on his podcast. “I was watching some interviews preparing for the podcast with him, and he was saying he just doesn’t get it,” Billingsley said. “He just doesn’t look at it as a Christmas movie, doesn’t feel it’s a Christmas movie. So, I asked him if I could attempt to change his mind. If you tune in there’s a segment where I plead my case to Jan to see if I can convince him that it is, in fact, a Christmas movie.”
When he started up this podcast, based on an idea from friend and actor Vince Vaughn, Billingsley took a look at A Christmas Story.
“Yes, we had Flick, Schwartz, and Randy on from the movie,” he said. “Scott Schwartz, R.D. Robb and Ian Petrella. It was fun because we hadn’t talked as a group about the movie in a long time. So, even though I did that movie, I learned a lot from the guys from hearing their point of view and perspective about it.”
In A Christmas Story, Billingsley plays Ralphie Parker. He does his best to work on a few people, including his parents (Melinda Dillon and Darren McGavin) and Santa Claus that he should get a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun at Christmas time.
