‘Tales From the Crypt’: Publishers Behind ‘Scott Pilgrim’ Resurrecting Iconic Horror Comic

Nearly eight decades after they published titles like Tales From the Crypt, EC Comics is shambling back to your local comic shop. Oni Press, known for Scott Pilgrim, is partnering with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., to launch new stories by top comics creators this summer.

“EC Comics is one of the most artistically important and culturally significant publishers of all time,” Oni’s publisher Hunter Gorinson told The Hollywood Reporter. “In ways both artful and shocking, EC confronted the darkness lurking behind the thin facade of American society — a throughline of radically confrontational storytelling that we intend to both uphold and escalate with the first new EC tales in decades,” he explained.

EC Comics is Set to Relaunch This Summer

Epitaphs From the Abyss marks the debut horror series under the relaunched EC Comics banner, set to premiere in July. Meanwhile, Cruel Universe will conjure up in August.

“We’re challenging ourselves to evolve EC’s relentless energy and fearless sensibilities in ways never before attempted,” Gorinson said. “These are intense comics for our intense times.”

Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson and Editor-in-Chief Sierra Hahn will lead Oni’s ambitious EC Comics publishing program. They are partnering with Cathy Gaines Mifsud and Corey Mifsud, the daughter and grandson of the renowned EC Publisher William M. Gaines. Cathy and Corey serve as administrators of William M. Gaines Agent, Inc.

“EC Comics is no stranger to a good comeback story! We’re thrilled to make this return with Oni Press and usher the classic EC sensibilities into the modern world,” Corey Mifsud explained. “It’s always been our dream to one day bring the fearless creative spirit of EC to a new generation. Working hand-in-hand with Oni’s award-winning team and a sensational cast of creators, it’s a pleasure to – at long last – shepherd EC into the 21st century with all-new series and stories.”

EC Comics Ushered in a Slew of Iconic Titles Such as ‘Tales from the Crypt’ and ‘MAD Magazine’

Founded by M.C. “Max” Gaines, EC Comics led a transformative era in comics. After Max died in 1947, son William M. Gaines rebranded it as “Entertaining Comics,” assembling a renowned creative team. They launched iconic comic magazines like Tales from the Crypt and MAD.

Forced to close by the Comics Code Authority in 1956, EC Comics’ subversive storytelling influence persisted through MAD Magazine’s success. MAD Magazine fueled American counterculture until Publisher William M. Gaines died in 1992. EC’s titles have inspired various media adaptations, such as HBO’s Tales from the Crypt franchise, and remain influential across comic creators, filmmakers, comedians, and musicians.
