After decades of constant rumors, the Legend of Zelda video game franchise is finally getting a live-action film.
According to Variety, the Legend of Zelda live-action film is in development from Nintendo and Maze Runner director Wes Ball. The official news was announced by the Japanese video game company as well as the game’s creator and developer, Shigeru Miyamoto.
In the announcement, Miyamoto couldn’t contain his excitement. “This is Miyamoto. I have been working on the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda for many years now with Avi Arad-san, who produced many mega hit films.”
Miyamoto also said that he has asked Arad to produce the film with him and they have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo being heavily involved in the production. “It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
In a press release, Nintendo stated that it would produce the film with Brad Productions Inc. The Legend of Zelda film will also be financed by the video game company and Sony Pictures Entertainment. More than 50% of the project will be financed by Nintendo. “The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment.”
Nintendo shared its goals for the film. “By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built,” the company stated. “Through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles.”
The video game company went on to add that getting deeply involved in the film’s production to “put smiles” on everyone’s faces. It will continue its efforts to produce unique entertainment as well as deliver it to as many people as possible.
X Quickly Reacts to the ‘Legend of Zelda’ Live-Action News
After the news surfaced on social media about the upcoming Legend of Zelda live-action film, X users took to the platform to share their thoughts about the upcoming movie.
“LIVE ACTION ZELDA MOVIE” one fan declared in all caps and used a Lebron James celebrating gif. Another fan also posted, “Will Tom Cruise be making a cameo? The way I see it, y’all still owe him for making Legend.”
However, not every Legend of Zelda fan was excited about big news. One fan begged Nintendo to not do it. “There is not a single live action version film that has been good,” they wrote. “Not one. They’re just not good. I don’t want another Dragonball Evolution based on Zelda and have everyone end up angry.”
The X user also suggested the Nintendo look at what the Bilzzcon is doing. “Check out the cinematic they make. I would say this is a good compromise between animation and live action, keeping the essence of a video game, it’d be great for Legend of Zelda.”
