What Happened to the Mutt Cuts ‘Shaggin Wagon’ From ‘Dumb and Dumber’?

The ultimate list of iconic cars of cinema: The Batmobile. Doc Brown’s DeLorean. The Ectomobile. The Shaggin Wagon from Dumb and Dumber

Okay, maybe the shaggy van from the 90s screwball comedy isn’t exactly the first vehicle to spring to mind when it comes to famous film cars. However, it’s certainly memorable and one of a kind.

Jeff Daniels starred alongside Jim Carrey in the Farrelly Brothers film, playing the role of Harry Dunne, a dog groomer who cruises around in the Mutt Cutts “Shaggin’ Wagon” for his job. Things take a wild turn when Harry loses his job and Lloyd Christmas (played by Carrey) discovers a mysterious briefcase left behind by a woman at an airport. This discovery leads the duo on a zany cross-country journey to return the briefcase to its owner in Aspen, Colorado. Unbeknownst to them, the briefcase is laden with ransom money.

Beneath all that fur, the Dumb and Dumber car hides a Ford Econoline, according to Hot Cars. The 1984 model came with a standard V6 engine and the option for a V8 or diesel. For Dumb and Dumber, the 1984 Econoline van underwent a miraculous transformation into a gargantuan dog on wheels. The tan carpeting, both inside and out, gave it a furry flair that left fans barking for more.

Of course, the van also gained floppy ears, a nose, whiskers, a tongue, and a tail. To access the gas cap on the Dumb and Dumber car, lift one of its “legs” on the rear side panels.

Where the Original Shaggin Wagon Sprang Up Following the Success of ‘Dumb and Dumber’

Naturally, the van’s eccentricity and lack of logic attracted numerous fans who went on to craft replicas of it. The fact that the vehicle is mostly just covered in tan carpet makes a lot of fans think, “So you’re saying there’s a chance?”. A fan doesn’t even need a 1984 Econoline to make the magic happen.

A replica of the Shaggin Wagon was featured at the Barrett-Jackson auction. Crafted from a 2003 Ford Econoline, this replica boasted a V8 engine paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Remaining faithful to the original, the Mutt Cutts replica included authentic props. These included Petey the Bird fur seats, and a mini bike.

However, where is the original Shaggin Wagon from Dumb and Dumber? Hot Cars reported that a Reddit stream stumbled upon the Mutt Cutts van resting at the Celebrity Car Museum in Branson, Missouri. It was revealed that the owner had connections with the film’s directors, the Farrelly Brothers. This led to the acquisition of the van for display in the museum.
