What Happened to the ‘Bumblebee’ Camaro From ‘Transformers’?

For fans of the Transformers movies, they’ve watched with great interest how Bumblebee changes around in its Camaro form. Old-school animation fans of Transformers will remember the car was a VW Beetle. It wasn’t until the movie franchise started to heat up that director Michael Bay made the switch.

And he didn’t forget about the VW Beetle form which is dear to Bumblebee fans.

When the Transformers movies started to be made, a 1977 model Chevrolet Camaro took over the role. Its color changed as time went on, too, changing into an amber-looking shade. Bumblebee also shifted into a Concept model, and that brought more fans into the fold.

Bay also decided to simply let the Autobot communicate only by some radio signals. The director explained that in the Transformers movie, he wanted a car that was different from another well-known automobile. Bay didn’t want comparisons made to Herbie the Love Bug, a VW Beetle who stole the show in Disney’s The Love Bug.

Bumblebee Camaro Takes Spot In ‘Transformers’ Film

In the first Transformers movie, Bumblebee, in its 1977 Chevrolet Camaro look, is sitting in a car lot next to a VW Beetle. But the Camaro dings up the Beetle, making it stand out a little more to customers.

There’s a bit of dialogue between Sam Witwicky and Bumblebee here from the 2007 movie. Witwicky asks, “Can you talk?” Bumblebee responds through the radio “XM Satellite One”…”Digital Cable brings you”…”Columbia Broadcasting System”… Witwicky follows up and asks, “So, you… so you talk through the radio?”

“Bumblebee” claps hands and says, “Thank you, you’re beautiful! You’re wonderful, you’re wonderful.” Witwicky follows up and asks, “So what was that last night? What was that?” “Bumblebee” replies while pointing upwards, “Message from Starfleet, Captain”…”Throughout the inanimate vastness of space”…And angels will rain down like visitors from Heaven! Hallelujah!”

Meanwhile, the VW Beetle appears in the 2018 film titled Bumblebee. The bot appears again yet is seriously damaged following a fight with Decepticon and Blitzwing. After appearing from a lake, Bumblebee changes shape into a classic VW Beetle.

Updated Camaro Model Also Flashes New Colors

Bumblebee shifted into a new Chevrolet Camaro model, this one from the 2006-08 years. The new Bumblebee gave off some old-school vibes with its smooth lines standing out. It is this version of the Camaro that movie fans love. Put it in a well-known sunrise yellow color with all the new-fangled adjustments and changes, and fans fall for it. A fifth-generation iteration of the Camaro.

Close viewers keeping up with Bumblebee watched it keep changing shapes in Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon. These adjustments include new alloys, a designer front bumper, and amber tones on the car with deeper stripes. Toss in darker side mirrors and rims to enhance its look.

In three Transformers movies between 2014 and 2018, the Chevrolet Camaro went through more changes. Ultimately, a more bulked-up look became part of Bumblebee going into the future. For Rise of the Beasts, keep your eyes peeled for a 1970 Camaro on board. That’ll be Bumblebee for you.

A number of the Chevrolet Camaros used in Transformers over the years were sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company’s event in Arizona. When a group of them sold off for about $500,000, that money was sent off to a non-profit organization.
